A dragon is a legendary creature, typically with serpentine or reptilian traits, that features in the myths of many cultures. There are two distinct cultural traditions of dragons: the European dragon, derived from European folk traditions and which is ultimately related to Greek and Middle Eastern mythologies, and the Chinese dragon, with counterparts in Japan,Korea and other East Asian countries
VARIOUS KINDS OF DRAGONS
Bearded Dragons
Bearded dragons are from Australia. They spend most of their time perched on logs, rocks or tree trunks, alert for the approach of any food item. Bearded dragons feed on a variety of insects, any small animal they can overpower, and flowers, greenery and fruits. They live in an environment that can be very harsh, so bearded dragons are adapted to eat almost any food that is available during lean seasons.
They also can store nutrients in huge abdominal fat bodies, and dig into the ground and go dormant for long periods during unfavorable times.
Chinese Dragons
In China, depiction of the dragon can be found in artifacts from the Shang and Zhou dynasties with examples dating back to the 16th century BC.The Chinese dragon is the highest-ranking animal in the Chinese animal hierarchy, strongly associated at one time with the emperor and hence power and majesty.
The Year of the Dragon, which takes place every twelve years, is considered lucky. Present-day Oriental astrologers claim that children born during Dragon Years enjoy health, wealth, and long life.
Chinese dragons are believed to be the rulers of moving bodies of water, such as waterfalls, rivers, or seas. They can show themselves as water spouts (tornado or twister over water).
Flying Dragons
A flying dragon is actually a lizard found in tropical forests of southeast Asia. There are about 15 species. Most are about 8 inches long. On either side of their body are thin, winglike folds of skin supported by five to seven ribs that extend from the body. With its "wings" extended the lizard is capable of gliding for distances of up to 30 feet. Thus the name flying dragon. The wings are often brightly colored, sometimes with stripes or spots, but when they are folded the body, greenish with a pale yellow belly, blends with the foliage. Flying dragons have slender legs, tapering tails, and brilliantly colored throat sacs, typically blue in the female and yellow-orange with a blue spot in the male. They live in trees, rarely descending to the ground, and feed on ants.
The Naga
Naga is a wingless type of Indian dragon found in Hindu and Buddhist culture. Although the word Naga is often ambiguous the Mahabharata (an epic Sanskrit poem that is an important Hindu text) tells us that the Naga possess the traits of both snakes and humans. In Hinduism, the Naga are portrayed in similar fashion to the Chinese family of dragons, being natural spirits that are associated with water sources but can also be European-style guardians of immense treasure.
Korean Dragons
The Korean dragons are derived from the Chinese ones, are given very similar cultural status, and look much the same. Where the Chinese dragon has five toes and the Japanese three, the Korean has four – the dragons are said to have lost toes as they moved south. The Korean dragon has a long beard and no wings. Like other Asian dragons, the Korean variety was supposed to be peaceful and kind creatures that were strongly associated with water and agriculture. They are mostly said to live in watery places such as rivers, ponds, lakes, and oceans.
Ice dragons
An ice dragon is a unique creature that lives in glaciers. Their wings are very thin and the texture of the wing is like the snow. Its wings reflect the sun when it is flying but it has to fly very high to do that. When its wings reflects the sun the creatures down below won’t be able to see it because the sun rays are going through the wings of the dragon. When the ice dragon goes hunting it usually freezes its prey alive or dead because it likes it meal to be frozen. It also freezes it prey because it might eat it later. When they hunt for seals and the seals go underwater the ice dragon can go swim underwater for a limited time.
Fire dragons
Great heat emanates from dragons' bodies, to the point that they steam during cold nights. They breathe extremely hot fire and cook their meat before eating it. They are capable of forming strong attachments to humans who raise them. They have a reasonably high level of animal intelligence, and can be trained to serve as battlemounts and receive vocal commands.
